Glatfelter Builds on a Legacy of Service to Clients and Communities

As the company celebrates its 75th anniversary, AIG leaders discuss the focus on clients, specialized expertise and service culture that set Glatfelter apart.

AIG’s Glatfelter Insurance Group supports organizations that keep communities running, from emergency responders and municipal leaders to educators and health care providers.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of Glatfelter, a company acquired by AIG in 2018. Its longevity reflects more than a history of specialized insurance products. It is a business built around understanding clients closely and responding quickly when it matters most.

AIG President & Chief Executive Officer Eric Andersen recently joined a fireside chat with Erin Fry, AIG President, Alternative Channels, and CEO, Glatfelter Insurance Group, at the Glatfelter headquarters in York, Pennsylvania, to reflect on their client-first culture and the pride Glatfelter associates bring to that responsibility.

"Insurance is a people business first,” Erin says. “We experience that day in and day out here, and it's part of the culture and the fabric of who we are as an organization.”

Local relationships, a broad network

Glatfelter and its more than 500 associates specialize in community-focused clients, who support the educational, emergency, religious, health care and municipal services that make everyday life possible across the U.S.

The company serves a variety of insurance needs, including property, casualty and management liability. Glatfelter’s flagship product is called VFIS, a specialty program the company pioneered in 1968 to support the unique needs of an underserved market: volunteer firefighters.

Glatfelter's role as a Managing General Agent (MGA), an insurance intermediary with underwriting authority from an insurer, is to support its more than 30,000 clients through a combination of innovative and tailored products, timely claims service and an extensive network of distribution partners.

Glatfelter’s strong company culture, unparalleled claims service and risk control help build connections with clients, bolster retention and support growth, Erin says.

"We have a strong sense of service, caring and community based on long-term relationships," she notes.

Specialized expertise

Years of experience supporting specialized clients provides Glatfelter with a unique competitive advantage in finding the right solutions for the challenges these organizations could face in the future.

“People have so much pride in the work that has been done historically, where the company is positioned and what it can do,” Eric says.

Glatfelter has grown consistently since becoming part of AIG. Securing the backing of a global insurer enables Glatfelter to better serve its agents and clients, while also positioning the company for continued and accelerated growth.

75 years of excellence

The company got its start in 1951 when founder Arthur J. Glatfelter returned home after military service with a desire to continue serving those in his community. He began creating his vision of a community-minded insurance agency from his kitchen table, building it into one of the largest full-service retail agencies in Central Pennsylvania.

He operated under an enduring set of values – trust, integrity and service – that still drive the company’s culture today.

That expertise, paired with AIG’s broader capabilities, gives Glatfelter a strong foundation to keep growing while remaining true to the clients and communities it was created to serve.
