Empowering the Leaders of Tomorrow

Howard University students spent a high-impact day learning about AIG careers and our client-centric approach.

Inside AIG’s Philadelphia office, a group of Howard University business students swapped their classrooms for conference rooms as they took part in a day of learning, gaining insights on the many benefits of an insurance career, how AIG works and how we live our Purpose and Values.

Howard University’s 48th annual Financial Services, Insurance and Risk Management (FIRM) Symposium helped business students acquire a deeper understanding of the responsibilities and expectations of the insurance industry through a mix of academic discussions and skill-building sessions. AIG hosted this event for the second year in a row.

Howard University, located in Washington, D.C., is one of the most well-known historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the U.S.

Protecting what matters most

The theme for this year’s FIRM symposium was effective loss control strategies and protecting what matters. The students learned about risk awareness and prevention, cyber-attacks, natural disasters and product liability issues, developing a deeper understanding of how AIG helps clients manage risk. Rachel Perry, AIG’s Head of Client Engagement, North America, provided insight on how AIG helps capture opportunities.

“At AIG, the mission is not simply about insurance policies,” Rachel said. “It is about helping businesses recover, supporting communities, enabling innovation, protecting livelihoods and creating resilience for the future.”

Strengthening business relationships

A big differentiator in this year’s event was the impactful involvement of key client and broker partners for a fireside chat and a panel discussion.

These sessions help bring the practice of insurance to life for the students. They also deepened key business relationships for AIG, engaging with clients and partners to support early career talent and showcasing our commitment to client centricity.

Fostering a Learn-It-All culture

As part of the program, the students filled more than 100 backpacks with school supplies to benefit the Kids in Need Foundation in partnership with WeHero. They learned about AIG’s Global Corporate Citizenship program and how it provides opportunities to make a difference beyond the workplace and heard from colleagues representing AIG’s Young Professionals & Allies Employee Resource Group about opportunities for high-potential, early-career professionals and AIG’s commitment to fostering a Learn-It-All culture.
