“The team that best demonstrates supreme performance and achievements – such as world, continental, international, or national and major championship titles,” read the description for World Team of the Year on the Laureus World Sports Awards website. Being the first team to win back-to-back Rugby World Cups and the first team ever to win the competition three times, the AIG-sponsored New Zealand All Blacks certainly fit the bill as they took home this award at the 2016 Laureus World Sports Awards in Berlin.

With a reputation for winning against the best teams within the world of rugby, it was no surprise that the All Blacks earned the award against tough competition from internationally recognized teams in other sports: FC Barcelona (soccer), Golden State Warriors (basketball), Great Britain Davis Cup Team (tennis), Mercedes AMG Petronas (motor racing), and the United States Women’s Soccer team.

All Blacks player Dan Carter was also recognized as World Comeback Player of the Year against athletes such as Jessica Ennis-Hill (track and field), Mick Fanning (surfing), Michael Phelps (swimming), David Rudisha (running), and Lindsey Vonn (skiing).

The annual Laureus World Sports Awards showcase the work of sport for good and celebrate the achievements of athletes from the across the globe.
