Premium Payment and Contract Reinstatement FAQs

  • How do I know when my premium is due?
  • Your premium frequency and method are established at the time your policy is issued, and will remain the same unless a change is formally requested. To determine your premium payment due date, please refer to any of the following: regular billing notice, annual statement, or by enrolling in eService.

You may also contact your Agent or American General Life Companies’ Customer Service Center at 1-800-487-5433.

  • What happens if I am late making my payment?
  • If you are late paying your premium or you receive a notice from American General Life Companies that your payment has not been received, please pay the premium payment due as soon as possible. If your payment is not received before the expiration of the grace period, your policy will terminate according to the policy provisions. Once your policy terminates, you will need to apply for reinstatement of your policy before the Company can consider placing it back in force.
  • Can I reinstate my policy if it lapses for nonpayment of premium?
  • If you are late paying your premium or you receive a notice from American General Life Companies that your payment has not been received, please pay the premium payment due as soon as possible. If your payment is not received before the expiration of the grace period, your policy will terminate according to the policy provisions. Once your policy terminates, you will need to apply for reinstatement of your policy before the Company can consider placing it back in force.
  • Can I reinstate my policy if it lapses for nonpayment of premium?
  • You may apply for reinstatement of your policy during a designated period of time, as indicated within your policy’s provisions. Reinstatement is the process of placing a policy back in force after it has lapsed due to nonpayment of premiums. During the reinstatement process you may be asked to provide evidence of insurability satisfactory to American General Life Companies, which could include copies of your medical records, additional medical exams, and/or other medical laboratory tests for full underwriting evaluation – similar to when you initially applied for your policy. All back premiums plus interest must be paid before the policy can be restored.
  • How do I submit an application to reinstate my policy if it lapses for nonpayment of premium?
  • Contact your Servicing Agent or American General Life Companies’ Customer Service Center at 1-800-487-5433 to determine if formal reinstatement is required and to determine the amount of any back premiums and interest that will need to be paid before the policy can be restored.
  • Am I still covered under my policy while I am going through the reinstatement process?
  • No. The original policy coverage will not be restored until the policy has been reinstated and premium payments are current.
  • Who should I contact to discuss my options?
  • If you have any questions regarding your policy premium payment or the reinstatement process, please contact your Servicing Agent or American General Life Companies’ Customer Service Center at 1-800-487-5433, and we will be happy to assist you.
