The New Zealand Women's Sevens team was on hand for the launch of the +Esporte +Valores program in February at Escola da Comunidade, an educational institute of the Visconde de Porto Seguro School. Established in partnership with the ALMA Rugby Institute and sponsored by AIG Brazil, the new program will allow more than forty youth under the age of 18 from Paraisópolis to attend camps for an entire year.
The program’s mission is to engage students and instill in them rugby values and abilities -- both on and off the field. In other words, they will learn about respect, discipline, teamwork, courage, and the joy of living.
Currently, the Escola da Comunidade offers about 1,700 scholarships and quality education to low-income residents of Paraisópolis and nearby Vila Andrade. The school offers elementary education classes, education for youth and adults, and extracurricular courses in a variety of technical professions.
The kick-off event was a great success. 40 students spent the afternoon in a rugby clinic with six professional players from the New Zealand Women´s Sevens team, as well as 130 guests, including team trainers, AIG staff, and local media.
