Rugby got its start in Colombia more than 20 years ago and is now experiencing a surge in popularity. AIG Colombia aimed to make a difference in the community by joining forces with the Colombian Rugby Federation to support a program aimed at empowering Afro-Colombian youths to build a better future through sports.
As part of AIG Colombia’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, the team sponsored hands-on events for over 800 students in the state of Antioquia featuring professional players from Colombia’s national team, Los Tucanes. The athletes visited local schools and shared valuable lessons in discipline, teamwork, persistence, diversity, and resilience, using their personal experiences as examples.
“These activities show AIG’s commitment to promote our values in the communities in which we operate,” said Jorge Echeverri, Antioquia Branch Manager. “We are proud of paving the way for more children to engage in this sport and benefit from the learnings it offers.”
Players such as Sebastián Mejía, captain of “Los Tucanes,” and Carlos Pestaña met with the passionate young rugby fans to tell firsthand stories about how perseverance, teamwork, and the power of doing the right thing are critical on and off the field.
AIG employees in the Antioquia branch joined in on the activities by sharing the Haka 360 experience, a virtual reality app that wowed the students. The AIG team also delivered AIG-branded rugby balls, t-shirts, and bags.
