AIG’s Managing Director for the Greater New York Region, Jon Monks, enjoys “seeing the lightbulbs go off as young people expand their understanding of…financial responsibilities.” A board member and volunteer for Junior Achievement (JA), Monks believes that JA’s work to empower youth “‘to own their economic success’ makes a real difference in the communities where AIG operates.”

On March 7, 2017, Monks accepted a U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award on AIG’s behalf at the annual JA Volunteer Summit in New York City. The Award from JA recognized AIG employees for donating at least 5,000 volunteer hours to JA during the 2015 – 2016 school year. Established in 2003 by President George W. Bush, the U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award honors volunteers who demonstrate active commitment to their communities and inspire others to serve.

Last year, 380 AIG volunteers in 20 cities around the world helped to educate more than 22,800 JA students in over 1,000 classrooms by providing training on financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship. Monks comments, “I applaud all of my colleagues who took the time to engage and assist JA students in charting their financial future.”

A majority of JA’s local offices received further support from AIG through sponsorships, fundraising events, student events, and additional classroom activities. Ten of JA’s offices also benefited from the leadership of AIG Board members.

Says Euis Cheristie, Head of Compliance, AIG Indonesia, “This was my first time participating in a JA activity, and I was…very happy and moved. I was thrilled because the kids are smart and spirited and had goals that they wanted to achieve. Hopefully this program will continue, and more and more Indonesian children [will be] reached.”

In 2017, AIG employees will provide students with mentoring and positive role models in the following locations: Amarillo, Atlanta, Berkeley Heights, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Livingston, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York, Stevens Point, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Ireland, the Philippines, Portugal, and Spain.
